About the ten frame

Two rows of five, which is the whole point of a ten frame. Five is a full row, ten is a full frame, and seven is a row and two more, all without counting.

Tap a space to put a counter in it, or use plus and minus to fill in order the way a child would. Both are useful: filling in order matches how children count, and placing counters freely is how you set up a question.

Add a second frame for numbers to twenty, which is where a ten frame earns its keep: a full frame and three is thirteen, and children can see the ten rather than counting it.

Two colours let you show a bond in one picture. Six red and four blue is a full frame, and the pair reads off it.

How to use it on your whiteboard

  1. 1Tap a space to add a counter, and tap the counter to take it away.
  2. 2Drag across the frame to fill several spaces at once.
  3. 3Use plus and minus to fill and empty in order.
  4. 4Switch to two frames for numbers past ten.
  5. 5Pick a second colour to show a number bond in one picture.

Questions

Can I use a double ten frame?
Yes. Two frames sit side by side for numbers to twenty.
Can I use two colours?
Yes. Choose a colour before you tap, so a bond like six and four shows as one picture.
Why two rows of five rather than a ten by one strip?
Because five as a row is what makes six recognisable without counting. A single strip of ten has to be counted.
