About the venn

Two overlapping loops and a tray of ten numbers. Pick what each loop is asking, drag a number into the loop it belongs in, and check it when the class has finished. Nothing is typed and nothing is scored.

The overlap is the part a class gets wrong, and the space outside both loops is the part they forget exists. Both are drawn properly here: the box round the whole diagram is where a number that belongs in neither loop goes, and without it a class puts it in one of them anyway.

A number lands in a tidy slot rather than wherever the finger let go, so nothing ever sits half in and half out of a loop, which is the one thing a Venn must never show. Drag it somewhere else and it moves; drop it outside the diagram and it goes back on the tray.

Check marks each number where it stands and says how many are in the right place. It is marking rather than a score: it comes off again, nothing counts up over a lesson and nothing is timed.

How to use it on your whiteboard

  1. 1Pick what each loop is asking on the toolbar. The blue loop and the red loop can each be even, more than 10, a multiple of 3 or a multiple of 5.
  2. 2Drag a number off the tray into a loop, into the middle where the loops cross, or into the space outside both.
  3. 3Drag a number again to move it, or drop it outside the box to put it back on the tray.
  4. 4Tap Check to mark the sort, and again to take the marking off.

Questions

What goes in the space outside both loops?
Anything that is in neither. That is the part of a Venn diagram classes forget, which is why the box round it is drawn: a number that fits neither loop has somewhere to go.
Why is there no odd loop?
Odd against even puts every number in one loop or the other, with nothing in the middle and nothing outside. It is worth saying out loud and a poor thing to spend a lesson sorting.
Is it scored?
No. Check marks what is where and says how many are right. Nothing counts up over a lesson, nothing is timed, and the marking comes off again.
