UK Map
Geography · Year 1–Year 6
Name the four countries, their capitals and the seas.
About the uk map
Three boards on the same map. Tap the four countries to name them, tap the capital cities, or tap the seas around us. Show all the labels for the version that is not a quiz, or leave them off and let the class do the naming.
The coastline is real. It is projected from Natural Earth's public domain map data rather than drawn by eye, because a wrong coastline in a geography lesson is worse than no map at all, and everything placed on it, every city and every stretch of sea, is placed from its real degrees of latitude and longitude.
The countries, the capitals and the seas are three boards rather than one, because twelve labels round one map is more than any diagram can place without leader lines crossing each other. It is also how a lesson runs: name the countries, then their capitals, then the water round them.
Ireland is drawn and never named. Northern Ireland is on the island of Ireland and the Republic is not part of the United Kingdom, so leaving it off would draw Northern Ireland floating in the sea and leaving it named would say something untrue.
The seas are drawn as areas rather than as outlines, because that is what they are: where the North Sea stops being the North Sea is a convention, not a coastline.
How to use it on your whiteboard
- 1Pick a board: countries, capitals or seas.
- 2Tap a country, a city or a stretch of sea to name it.
- 3The line under the map says something about whichever one you tapped.
- 4Press Show all to put every name on at once, and Hide to take them all off.
- 5Use Next to work round them in order.
Questions
- Is the map accurate?
- Yes. The outlines are projected from Natural Earth 1:50m data, which is public domain, rather than drawn freehand, and the cities and seas are placed from their real coordinates.
- Why is the Republic of Ireland on the map but not labelled?
- Because Northern Ireland shares an island with it. Leaving it off would show Northern Ireland surrounded by sea, and labelling it would put a country that is not part of the United Kingdom into a lesson about the four that are.
- Can the class name them rather than being told?
- That is the default. Nothing is labelled until it is tapped, and the Labels control puts them all on when you want to check.
