About the plant parts

Two diagrams: a whole flowering plant, and one flower cut in half. Tap a part and its name appears with what it does written underneath, or press Show all and read the lot at once.

The plant is the Year 3 objective in one picture: roots, stem, leaves and flower, with the job of each. What a class most often gets muddled is that the leaves make the food and the roots only take in water, so both jobs are written out in full.

The flower is cut through, which is the only way to show a stigma and an ovary at all. A flower seen from the front is a picture of petals, and the parts that matter for pollination and for making seeds are all inside.

The dots are on the diagram before anything is named, so a class can see where to press. Nothing is hidden by naming a part: it is the same diagram either way, with the part being read about at full strength and the rest sitting back.

It works as a quiz or as a reference. Start with nothing named and go round the class, or press Show all and leave it up while they draw their own.

How to use it on your whiteboard

Questions

Why is the flower cut in half?
Because the stigma, the stamens and the ovary are inside it. A flower drawn from the front shows petals and nothing else, and every part a Year 3 class is asked to name for pollination and seed formation would be behind them.
Why are both leaves one label?
Because the objective names leaves, not a left leaf and a right leaf. Tapping either one names them both, which is also how a child would answer the question out loud.
Where is the nectary?
Left off. It sits at the base of the ovary, close enough that its dot and the ovary's would overlap, and a diagram where pressing one part names another is worse than a diagram with one fewer part on it. Point it out on the board instead.
Is the plant a real species?
No, and deliberately not. It is the schematic plant a class draws in a book: one stem, two leaves, one flower head. A picture of a real buttercup would be a better botany lesson and a worse diagram.
