About the multiplication square

The grid that is on the wall of most KS2 classrooms, with the shading a wall chart cannot do. Tap the 7 along the top and the seven times table lights up. Tap the 7 down the side as well and the two lines cross at 49, which is the picture behind 7 times 8 and 8 times 7 being the same fact.

Tap any single cell to mark it, or drag across a run of them. Tapping a header again clears that table, so one colour can move from table to table without reaching for Undo. The four colours mean a class can put the 4s and the 8s up together and look at what they share.

Hide the products and the grid goes blank apart from the headers. Shading still shows a cell's product, so hiding them turns the same tap into a reveal: ask for 8 times 6, tap it, and there is the answer. Tap the 8 header instead and the whole table appears at once.

Squares shades the diagonal, which is the one set worth having a button for because it has no header to tap. It is also the quickest way to show why the grid is symmetrical about that line.

How to use it on your whiteboard

  1. 1Tap a number along the top or down the side to shade that times table. Tap it again to clear it.
  2. 2Tap a cell to mark it on its own, or drag across several.
  3. 3Colour picks the colour the next tap uses, so two tables can go up in different colours.
  4. 4Products hides every answer. Shading a cell still shows it, so the grid becomes a reveal.
  5. 5Grid switches between 10 by 10 and 12 by 12. Squares shades the square numbers.

Questions

Why is there no button for each times table?
Because the grid already has twelve of them. The header you would point at is the button, which is one tap in the place you are already pointing, and it leaves the toolbar room for the things the grid cannot do.
How do I use it for times table practice?
Tap Products to hide the answers. The headers stay, so you can ask for any fact on the grid, and tapping the cell shows just that one. Tap a header to reveal a whole table at once when you want to check.
How do I show that 7 times 8 is the same as 8 times 7?
Tap the 7 along the top and the 7 down the side. The two lines cross at 49, and the 56 in each line sits in mirror-image positions either side of the diagonal. Squares shades that diagonal so the mirror line is visible.
Does it go past 12?
No. The national curriculum asks for tables up to 12 by 12 by the end of Year 4, and that is the grid children see everywhere else. A larger grid would make every cell smaller for something nobody is being taught.
